Silver Leaves

Some plants are patterned; this one is woven. Tropical Tapestry® 'Zebra' ( Labisia sp. ) runs pale silver and light-green stripes across a deep green ground, so every leaf reads like a length of hand-loomed cloth. It's an understory plant by nature, which makes it refreshingly undemanding about light — bright but diffused, or even partial shade, suits it perfectly. It does prefer higher humidity and a substrate kept evenly hydrated, never waterlogged — a bathroom shelf out of direct sun can be a great fit.

Named for the Thai highlands it hails from, Endless Cascades® 'Loei' ( Hoya sp. ) splashes irregular silver markings across narrow, olive-green leaves — leathery, slightly arched, and lined with fine parallel veins. It's a twining epiphyte and a patient grower, so let it take its time heading wherever you point it. Bright, filtered light keeps the silver splashing bold, and an airy, fast-draining mix suits its epiphytic roots; water once the top inch has dried.

Some hearts are made of gold; Endless Cascades® Silver Heart™ went for something rarer. This trailing hoya ( Hoya acuta ) wears its heart on every vine — thick, softly rounded leaves washed almost edge to edge in cool pewter silver, freckled with deep green along their edges and strung along slender russet stems that spill over the rim of the pot and just keep going. Give it bright, indirect light and let the soil dry out completely between waterings — those succulent leaves keep their own reserves — and 'Silver Heart' will cascade for you, one silver lining at a time.
